Moving to North County San Diego: Coast vs. Inland Guide

Oct 17, 2026
6 min read

North County San Diego is the stretch of San Diego County between Camp Pendleton and the city of San Diego. When people talk about moving to North County San Diego, they usually mean one of five cities: Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos or Escondido. Our Escondido office runs moves across all of them, and the first question we help people answer is simple: coast or inland?

This guide compares the two, walks through each city, covers the main freeways and adds notes for military families near Camp Pendleton. For details on a single city, follow the links or visit our San Diego County movers hub.

Coast vs. inland: the basic choice

The coastal cities along I-5 have milder weather all year, with morning marine layer in late spring and early summer, a walkable beach lifestyle and higher prices. Inland along SR-78 and I-15, summers are noticeably warmer, lots tend to be larger, and you usually get more space for the money.

  • Coast (Oceanside, Carlsbad): beach access, cooler summers, tighter parking and more condos and townhomes.
  • Inland (Vista, San Marcos, Escondido): bigger lots, more single-family homes, hillside streets and hotter afternoons.

Oceanside

Oceanside is North County’s largest beach city, with its pier, harbor and a transit center served by the Coaster, the Sprinter and Amtrak. Near the water you will find older beach bungalows, apartments and condos; further east, along SR-76 and SR-78, neighborhoods are mostly single-family tracts. Oceanside borders Camp Pendleton, so many military families live here.

Carlsbad

Carlsbad has the walkable Carlsbad Village by the beach, LEGOLAND California and the spring Flower Fields. Much of the city east of I-5 is master-planned, including communities such as La Costa and Aviara, so most moves here involve an HOA, a gate or both. Ask about move hours and truck parking before you pick a date.

Vista

Vista sits inland of Oceanside along SR-78. It has a revitalized downtown, plenty of hillside lots and semi-rural streets on its edges. Long, steep driveways are common, and we plan for them: on hourly moves there are no extra stair or long-carry fees, but a tight driveway may mean the truck parks at the street and the crew carries further.

San Marcos

San Marcos is home to Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College, with a mix of established neighborhoods and newer planned communities such as San Elijo Hills. Many newer homes are in HOAs with set move hours and limited street parking for large trucks.

Escondido

Escondido, at the junction of SR-78 and I-15, has a historic downtown along Grand Avenue, older neighborhoods with larger lots and hillside homes on the edges of town. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is just outside the city. It is the warmest of the five in summer, so early starts make a real difference.

Military families near Camp Pendleton

Many families stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton live off base in Oceanside, Vista and nearby communities. We are a private moving company: we handle moves that you arrange and pay for yourself, such as moving from one off-base rental to another or into a home you have bought.

Please keep a few things in mind:

  • We do not hold government moving contracts. If your move is arranged through the military, go through your installation’s transportation or relocation office.
  • Access to any base or on-base housing is controlled by the installation. Check the current access rules for vehicles, drivers and crews with the base before you book, and plan the move around what they allow.
  • Summer is a busy rotation season across the region, so book early if your dates fall between late spring and late summer.

Getting around: I-5, SR-78 and I-15

  • I-5: runs along the coast through Oceanside and Carlsbad, south to downtown San Diego and north through Camp Pendleton toward Orange County.
  • SR-78: the east-west link from Oceanside through Vista and San Marcos to Escondido. It is the main local route and gets busy at rush hour.
  • I-15: the inland north-south route through Escondido, south to San Diego and north to Temecula and the Inland Empire.

Transit helps too: the Coaster runs along the coast from Oceanside toward downtown San Diego, and the Sprinter light rail runs inland from Oceanside to Escondido along the 78 corridor. If you will commute to San Diego, drive the route at rush hour before you choose between coast and inland.

Which North County city fits you?

From the moves we run, a rough pattern shows up:

  • You want the beach in daily life: Oceanside or Carlsbad, often accepting a smaller home or condo living for the location.
  • You want a yard and room for a workshop, boat or RV: Vista or Escondido, where larger lots are easier to find.
  • You want a newer home in a planned community: San Marcos or the master-planned parts of Carlsbad.
  • You commute south to San Diego: compare I-5 from the coast with I-15 from Escondido; the better route depends on where you work.
  • You commute north to Orange County or Riverside County: Oceanside is closest to I-5 north, while Escondido puts you on I-15 toward Temecula.

Many families rent first in one city and buy later in another. Because moves within San Diego County are local hourly moves, that second move is usually a short, simple job.

Moving day notes for North County

  • Coastal parking: near the beach, reserve space for the truck or ask neighbors to leave curb space, especially on summer weekends.
  • Hillside access: tell us about steep driveways, narrow private roads or tight turns so we can bring the right truck.
  • HOAs and gates: share the community’s move rules, gate codes and any elevator reservations when you book.
  • Packing: if time is short, our packing and unpacking service can handle a few rooms or the whole home.

Moves within San Diego County, and moves from Orange County, Riverside County or Los Angeles into North County, are local hourly moves under California rules: the hourly rate for the time worked plus double drive time: the drive between your two addresses, billed twice under the California rule.

  • 2 movers and a truck: $119 per hour
  • 3 movers: $159 per hour
  • 4 movers: $199 per hour
  • 5 movers: $239 per hour

These are weekday rates; weekends and month-end may differ. We do not do same-day moves, but next-day is often possible. Released Value coverage at $0.60 per pound per item is included at no cost, with extra coverage on request. See local moving for how hourly moves work, or our San Diego movers page if you are also considering the city itself.

Moving to the Inland Empire: Cities, Commutes and Heat

Most people moving to the Inland Empire tell us the same thing: they want more space. A bigger yard, a garage that fits a car, a newer house, or simply more home for the money than they could find in Los Angeles or Orange County. Our headquarters is in Moreno Valley, so the Inland Empire is home turf for our crews, and we see what works (and what goes wrong) on moving day across both counties.

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California: A Guide

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California is one of the most common long-distance moves in the state. We see it from San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, San Jose and Sacramento, headed to Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego. Because the whole trip stays inside California, it works differently from a local hourly move, and knowing how it works makes planning much easier.

Moving to Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley: A Guide

Every week our Los Angeles crews drive a family over the Newhall Pass with a truck full of furniture. Moving to Santa Clarita, or further north to Palmdale and Lancaster, is usually about space: a bigger home, a yard and a quieter street than the same budget buys in the LA basin. The trade-offs are the commute, the weather and, in many neighborhoods, HOA rules.

Moving to Orange County: A Mover’s Guide to OC Cities

Orange County looks small on a map, but moving to Orange County really means choosing between three different kinds of place: the beach cities, the older central core and the master-planned south. Our crews run Orange County moves every week from our Anaheim office, and the right pick usually comes down to three things: your commute, the type of home you want and how much space you need for your budget.
