Moving in San Diego

Downtown high-rises and event days

Downtown San Diego moves are mostly high-rise condos and apartments in the East Village, Little Italy, the Gaslamp and Cortez Hill, with loading docks, elevator reservations and certificate-of-insurance rules. We send the COI ahead and book the crew into your move window. Padres home games at Petco Park and Comic-Con in July close streets and fill parking around the East Village and the Convention Center, so we check the calendar before you pick a date.

Beach neighborhoods and older homes

In Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach and Point Loma the streets are narrow, many buildings are walk-ups and parking is tight, especially on summer weekends. We look at the access first and send enough movers so stairs and longer carries do not stretch the day. In North Park, South Park and Kensington, older Craftsman homes get floor runners and door-jamb protection as standard.

Military families and moves from Los Angeles

San Diego is home to Naval Base San Diego, Naval Air Station North Island and MCAS Miramar. We move military families as a private move, not under a government contract, so you book and pay us directly. If you are moving in or out of base housing, check the base’s access rules for a civilian truck ahead of time and we plan the start around the gate. Many of our San Diego moves come from Los Angeles and Orange County: these are local hourly moves under California rules. See our Los Angeles to San Diego moving guide.

How it works

Your San Diego move in four steps

  1. Step 1: Tell us about the move

Call or send the form with both addresses. A short phone or video walk-through of your San Diego home sizes the crew and the truck.

  2. Step 2: Get a written estimate

Hourly rate, crew size and estimated hours in writing before you book. Weekday and mid-month dates are the easiest to get.

  3. Step 3: Moving day

The lead mover calls ahead, the crew protects floors and door frames and wraps every piece of furniture before it leaves the room.

  4. Step 4: Set up in the new home

Furniture placed where you want it, beds and tables put back together, and a walk-through with you before the crew leaves.

FAQ

Moving in San Diego: questions and answers

Local moves are hourly for the crew and truck, plus double drive time between your two addresses. On weekdays two movers start at $119 an hour and three at $159; weekends and month-end can differ. A one-bedroom downtown condo is usually a half-day for two movers; a three-bedroom house is most of a day for three or four. You get a written estimate after a short video walk-through.

Moves between Los Angeles and San Diego are local moves under California rules: hourly for the crew and truck plus double drive time, not a long-distance flat rate. The written estimate shows the full total. See our Los Angeles to San Diego moving guide.

Yes. Send us the building’s COI requirements and we issue the certificate before moving day, then schedule the crew to your elevator reservation and loading-dock time.

Yes. We move military families as a private move, not under a government contract, so you book and pay us directly. We plan around base access and your report date; overnight storage on the truck is $129 a night for 1–2 bedrooms and $149 for 3–4 if the dates do not line up.

Tips for your move

Moving to the Inland Empire: Cities, Commutes and Heat

Most people moving to the Inland Empire tell us the same thing: they want more space. A bigger yard, a garage that fits a car, a newer house, or simply more home for the money than they could find in Los Angeles or Orange County. Our headquarters is in Moreno Valley, so the Inland Empire is home turf for our crews, and we see what works (and what goes wrong) on moving day across both counties.

Moving to North County San Diego: Coast vs. Inland Guide

North County San Diego is the stretch of San Diego County between Camp Pendleton and the city of San Diego. When people talk about moving to North County San Diego, they usually mean one of five cities: Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos or Escondido. Our Escondido office runs moves across all of them, and the first question we help people answer is simple: coast or inland?

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California: A Guide

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California is one of the most common long-distance moves in the state. We see it from San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, San Jose and Sacramento, headed to Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego. Because the whole trip stays inside California, it works differently from a local hourly move, and knowing how it works makes planning much easier.
