Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California is one of the most common long-distance moves in the state. We see it from San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, San Jose and Sacramento, headed to Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego. Because the whole trip stays inside California, it works differently from a local hourly move, and knowing how it works makes planning much easier.
This guide explains how our dedicated-truck, flat-price move works, what the written quote is based on, a realistic timeline, what to do before the truck arrives and how to choose where to live in Southern California.
How a dedicated-truck, flat-price move works
Our long-distance moves are within California only, and each one uses a dedicated truck. That means:
- Your belongings are the only load on the truck. Nothing is consolidated with other customers’ shipments, and there are no stops to pick up or drop off someone else’s furniture.
- The same crew loads and delivers, so the people who wrapped your furniture are the people who place it in your new home.
- The price is flat. It is based on your inventory, not on hours, so traffic on I-5 or over the Grapevine does not change what you pay.
Most moves from the Bay Area take I-5 down the Central Valley and over the Grapevine into Los Angeles County; some go by US-101 or SR-99 depending on where you start and finish. Either way, the route is our problem, not yours.
Step 1: the inventory-based written quote
A flat price is only as good as the inventory behind it. We build it from a visual or video walk-through of your home, so you do not need to list every item from memory.
During the walk-through, show us everything that is moving:
- Every room, including closets, the garage, the attic, storage units and the patio.
- Large and awkward items: sectional sofas, wall units, exercise equipment, outdoor furniture.
- Heavy items such as pianos, safes and pool tables, which are listed on the written price.
- Access at both ends: stairs, elevators, long walks from parking, narrow streets or HOA rules.
You then get a written quote. If you add items after the walk-through, tell us before moving day so the quote can be updated. That is how a flat price stays flat.
Step 2: a realistic timeline
There is no single right schedule, but this is the order that works for most of our Bay Area customers:
- As soon as you have dates: book the walk-through and get the written quote. Summer and month-end fill up first.
- A few weeks out: declutter. Every item you sell or donate in San Jose is one you do not pay to move to San Diego.
- Two weeks out: start packing rooms you do not use every day, or book our packing and unpacking service for some or all of the home.
- One week out: confirm elevator reservations, loading zones and HOA move hours at both addresses, and send us the details.
- The day before: empty and defrost the fridge, disconnect the washer if you can, and pack a box of essentials that travels with you.
What to do before the truck arrives
Bay Area moves often start in apartments and condos with tight rules, so preparation saves real time:
- Reserve the freight elevator and loading dock, and ask building management what paperwork they need from the mover.
- In San Francisco and other dense neighborhoods, check whether you need to arrange curb space or a parking permit for the truck.
- Keep documents, keys, medication, jewelry and laptops with you, not on the truck.
- Label boxes by room at the new address, not the old one.
- Make sure someone is at the delivery address with keys at the agreed time.
Packing for a long-distance drive
A long-distance load travels farther than a local one, so packing matters more. What we see work best:
- Use sturdy boxes in a few standard sizes so they stack tightly. Mixed grocery boxes crush under weight.
- Keep boxes liftable: books and records in small boxes, linens and pillows in large ones.
- Pack plates on edge with paper between them, and fill empty space so nothing shifts on the highway.
- Take apart what you can, such as bed frames, table legs and shelves, and tape the bagged hardware to the piece it belongs to.
- Leave flammables, paint, propane, perishable food and plants off the truck; they cannot travel with your furniture.
Our crew wraps furniture in moving blankets as part of loading. If you would rather not pack at all, ask us to include packing in your quote.
When the keys are not ready yet
Closing dates and lease start dates do not always line up. If there is a gap, we can hold your belongings on the truck overnight: $129 per night for 1–2 bedrooms and $149 per night for 3–4 bedrooms. It saves unloading into a storage unit and loading again.
Coverage and licensing
Every move includes Released Value coverage at $0.60 per pound per item at no cost. It is basic protection: a 50-pound television, for example, would be covered at $30. If you are moving valuable furniture or electronics, ask about extra coverage when you get your quote. We hold California Household Movers Permit CAL-T 0191935, which you can and should check for any mover you hire.
Choosing where to land in Southern California
Many people moving from the Bay Area know the job, not the neighborhood. A quick comparison from what we see on moving day:
- Los Angeles: the closest match to Bay Area city life, with apartments, older homes and busy streets. Start at our Los Angeles County movers page or Los Angeles movers for the city itself. If you want more space within LA County, Santa Clarita is worth a look.
- Orange County: beach cities, an older central core and master-planned south county communities. People relocating for tech and engineering jobs often look at Irvine. See our Orange County movers hub.
- The Inland Empire: usually the most space for the money, newer homes and hot summers. Cities like Riverside are a good starting point; see our Riverside County and San Bernardino County pages.
- San Diego: coastal weather and a calmer pace. Compare San Diego itself with North County on our San Diego County movers hub.
Once you are settled, any later move between Southern California counties is a local hourly move under California rules, which is a good thing to know if you rent first and buy later.
