Moving Prices, Explained

No two moves cost the same, but every JFK Moving estimate is built the same way: an hourly rate for local moves, a flat price for long-distance moves, flat fees for specialty items, and nothing added on moving day. Here is how the number is put together.

Local moves

What sets the price of a local move

Local moves inside California are billed by the hour under CPUC rules.

Factor How it affects the price
Crew size and truck Two movers for a studio or one-bedroom, three or four for a house. A larger crew costs more per hour and finishes sooner.
Hours worked From arrival at your origin to the last item placed at the destination.
Double drive time The drive between your two addresses is billed twice, in place of any travel charge from our office.
Packing Optional, billed hourly with materials included.
Specialty items Flat fees for pianos, safes and pool tables, quoted in advance.
Not charged Stairs, elevators, long carries, blankets, wrap, dollies and basic Released Value coverage.

Long distance

How long-distance moves are priced

Moves to Northern California, the Bay Area, Sacramento and the Central Valley are quoted as a flat price, not by the hour. The price comes from the inventory (a visual or video estimate), the distance and route, access at both ends, and the services you add: packing, unpacking, storage and declared-value coverage. The written price covers everything listed on it.

Payment

Booking and payment

Deposit

A deposit holds your date and is applied to the final bill. Give 24 hours' notice to reschedule; after three reschedules it is kept as a booking fee.

When you pay

At the end of the move, once the truck is unloaded and your furniture is reassembled.

How you pay

Cash, debit, major credit cards and payment apps. Card and app payments carry a small processing fee; cash avoids it. Business checks for commercial moves.

Coverage

Released Value protection ($0.60 per pound per item) at no cost; additional valuation on request.

How it works

How to Get an Accurate Quote

  1. Step 1: List what is moving

Room by room, including the garage, patio and closets.

  2. Step 2: Send photos or video

A short walk-through video is the fastest way to size the crew.

  3. Step 3: Tell us about access

Stairs, elevators, parking and HOA or building rules at both addresses.

  4. Step 4: Get it in writing

Hourly rate and time range, or a flat long-distance price, before you book.

Hourly rates by crew size

Local moves are billed by the hour for the crew and truck. Weekday rates: two movers $119 per hour, three movers $159, four movers $199 and five movers $239. The crew size follows your home: two movers for a studio or one-bedroom, three for a two-bedroom, four for a three- or four-bedroom house. Weekends and the first and last days of the month are busier and can carry a different rate, so the rate for your date is put in writing before you book. The moving cost calculator turns these rates into a price range for your home size.

How to keep a local move inexpensive

  • Finish packing the day before and label every box by room.
  • Clear loose items off furniture and empty drawers of anything heavy.
  • Reserve the elevator or the curb so the crew is not waiting or walking.
  • Move mid-week and mid-month when rates and availability are best.
  • Declutter first: everything you do not move is time you do not pay for. See five ways to save money on your move.

Estimates, quotes and what is binding

A local move estimate states the hourly rate and an expected time range; the final bill is the actual hours worked plus double drive time, which is why an accurate inventory matters. A long-distance quote is a flat price based on the inventory you gave us; it only changes if the inventory does. Either way you receive the number in writing before you book, and nothing is added on moving day. Questions about coverage and claims are answered on the valuation coverage and claims pages.

Pricing FAQ

Local moves are billed hourly for the crew and truck: $119 per hour for two movers, $159 for three, $199 for four and $239 for five, plus California’s double drive time between your two addresses. A packed one-bedroom apartment usually takes three to six hours with two movers. Request a free estimate for the written rate and time range for your date.

Yes. Phone, video and in-home estimates are all free and without obligation.

Packing (optional, hourly with materials), flat fees for pianos, safes and pool tables, storage holds, and additional valuation coverage. Everything else, including stairs, long carries and equipment, is included.

No separate travel charge. California’s double drive time rule bills the drive between your two addresses twice instead.

Weekends and the first and last days of the month are the busiest and may carry a different rate; mid-week and mid-month dates are the easiest to book.

Pack everything yourself, declutter first, book a weekday mid-month and have parking and elevators reserved. For a few items, a single item move is cheaper than a full crew.
