Signal Hill Movers

Signal Hill is a 2.2-square-mile city on a hill completely surrounded by Long Beach, with view condos on the crest, apartments and older houses on the slopes and working oil wells in between. JFK Moving reaches it from our Anaheim office, about 11 miles east, or from Los Angeles, about 20 miles north, and we plan every move around the two things that matter here: the grade of your street and where a truck may stand on it. The estimate is written, and stairs and long carries cost nothing extra.

Moving in Signal Hill

Hilltop condos and steep streets

The crest of the hill is 365 feet above Long Beach, and the Hilltop Area Specific Plan filled it with view-oriented condominium flats and single-family homes, including the gated Bixby Ridge community. Some of the trails and sidewalks up here run at a 15 to 25 percent grade. We send a truck that can park on a slope, chock the wheels, find the shortest level route to the door and carry on the steepest sections instead of rolling a dolly. Condo buildings need the elevator reserved and often a certificate of insurance for the HOA, which we send before moving day.

Apartments, townhomes and parking rules below the hill

Just under half of Signal Hill households rent, many of them in apartment buildings and in townhome complexes such as the ones built along Pacific Coast Highway and Orizaba Avenue. On these streets the move is about the curb. The city fines cars left out on street-sweeping day, has permit-only blocks such as the 2700 block of Hill Street, and keeps trailers, RVs and other oversized vehicles off public streets without a 72-hour permit. A moving truck that arrives in the morning and leaves with your things is not the problem; a truck or container left overnight is, so tell us in advance and we plan the permit or a different parking spot. If you order a temporary bin for the clear-out, a bin on a city street needs an encroachment permit from Public Works.

Cherry Avenue, the 405 and getting out

The 405 crosses the north side of the city with exits at Cherry Avenue and at Spring Street beside the Signal Hill Auto Center, so a truck is on the freeway within minutes. Long Beach is all around you, Lakewood is 4 miles north and Seal Beach and Los Alamitos are just over the Orange County line, all short hourly local moves billed with double drive time. For the Westside, the San Fernando Valley or San Diego the same crew drives it; for Northern California we run a dedicated truck, see long-distance moving. Businesses along Spring Street and Cherry Avenue are handled by our commercial moving team, and the rest of Los Angeles County by the same two offices.

How it works

Your Signal Hill move in four steps

  1. Step 1: Tell us about the move

Call or send the form with both addresses. A short phone or video walk-through of your Signal Hill home sizes the crew and the truck.

  2. Step 2: Get a written estimate

Hourly rate, crew size and estimated hours in writing before you book. Weekday and mid-month dates are the easiest to get.

  3. Step 3: Moving day

The lead mover calls ahead, the crew protects floors and door frames and wraps every piece of furniture before it leaves the room.

  4. Step 4: Set up in the new home

Furniture placed where you want it, beds and tables put back together, and a walk-through with you before the crew leaves.

FAQ

Moving in Signal Hill: questions and answers

Weekday rates are $119 an hour for two movers and a truck, $159 for three, $199 for four and $239 for five, plus double drive time between your two addresses. A hilltop two-bedroom condo with a reserved elevator is typically a half day for three movers; a three-bedroom house with a garage is most of a day. Weekend and month-end rates can differ, so ask for the written estimate.

Yes. We check the street on a map before the move, send a truck that can park on the slope, chock it and carry on the steepest stretches rather than roll. Where the HOA limits truck size or sets move-in hours, send us the rules and we match them.

Not for a truck that loads and leaves the same day. Signal Hill’s oversized-vehicle rule covers trailers, RVs and trucks left on a public street, with a 72-hour permit available from the city, and some blocks are permit-only. If you want a truck or container to stay overnight, tell us and we sort out the permit or park it elsewhere. Avoid your block’s street-sweeping hours, which carry a fine.

Crews come from Anaheim, 2758 W. Lincoln Ave., about 11 miles east, or from our Los Angeles office at 400 S. Kingsley Dr., about 20 miles north, whichever has the crew free on your date. Double drive time is billed only between your two addresses, never for our drive to you.

Yes. See the Long Beach, Lakewood and Seal Beach pages; moves between them and Signal Hill are short hourly jobs.

Tips for your move

Moving to the Inland Empire: Cities, Commutes and Heat

Most people moving to the Inland Empire tell us the same thing: they want more space. A bigger yard, a garage that fits a car, a newer house, or simply more home for the money than they could find in Los Angeles or Orange County. Our headquarters is in Moreno Valley, so the Inland Empire is home turf for our crews, and we see what works (and what goes wrong) on moving day across both counties.

Moving to North County San Diego: Coast vs. Inland Guide

North County San Diego is the stretch of San Diego County between Camp Pendleton and the city of San Diego. When people talk about moving to North County San Diego, they usually mean one of five cities: Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos or Escondido. Our Escondido office runs moves across all of them, and the first question we help people answer is simple: coast or inland?

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California: A Guide

Moving from the Bay Area to Southern California is one of the most common long-distance moves in the state. We see it from San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, San Jose and Sacramento, headed to Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego. Because the whole trip stays inside California, it works differently from a local hourly move, and knowing how it works makes planning much easier.
